To Whom it May Concern,
I cannot begin to tell you what a difference Dr. Iole Taddei and Vision Therapy have made in the life of my son, Manuel. My husband and I adopted Manuel from the foster care system when hew as 6 years old. I am an elementary school teacher, and as such, I was very concerned when I soon discovered how difficult reading was for him. In my career teaching the early elementary school grades, I had seen several other students with some of the same reading behaviors as my son. Manuel often lost his place, and seemed to pull letters from the surrounding words. He also had a lot of difficulty rereading words or sentences and would confuse common sight words that looked alike to him (it/is, what/that, up/us), and didn’t seem to care when they made no sense in the sentence. His teachers and I worked with him, and we used many techniques to help him improve his reading skills. He would seem to make progress for a few weeks for months, and then we would hit a plateau and revert o some of the same reading behaviors I thought he had changed.
Manuel was getting more and more frustrated, and I was beginning to lose hope that he would ever enjoy reading, or feel successful as a reader. At the beginning of 4th grade, Manuel was reading at a 1st grade level. I decided to try Vision Therapy, and I am so sorry I didn’t do it sooner. After about 9 months of weekly Vision Therapy with Dr. Taddei, Manuel reached and early 3rd grade reading level. He continued reading over the summer without Vision Therapy, and was tested at a beginning 4th grade DRA reading level at the beginning of 5th grade. By the end of 5th grade his DRA assessment put him at a beginning 6th grade reding level. He went form scoring “below basic” on the CST in reading and math in 3rd grade, to “proficient” in 5th grade and “advanced” in 6th grade. As his academic skills improved, so did his confidence. When he invited me to his Reader’s Theatre group presentation at the end of 5th grade, I had tears in my eyes. He had been avoiding reading out loud since 1st grade. He is now in 7th grade, and has been o the Honor Roll at his middle school since the beginning of 5th grade. He shows his honor roll certificates to nearly everyone who comes to our house.
Dr. Taddei made sure that every Vision Therapy session was very focused and beneficial to Manuel. My son and I both began to see results after about a month of therapy. Dr. Taddei constantly monitored his progress through periodic assessments, and by talking to both Manuel andI about his experiences with reading, sports, math, and may other activities that involved vision. She was always very supportive of Manuel’s successes and mindful of his struggles. I bring him every 6 months or so for follow up exams, and Dr. Taddei continues to display the same high level of involvement and care. Manuel looks forward to these exams, even though he knows they can sometimes be tiring. I think this is so because he trust that she not only has his best interests in mind, but that she would be able to help with any problems me might have.
I often recommend Vision Therapy and DR Taddei to other parents and teachers. I feel that so many children would benefit form Vision Therapy. Those 9 months of weekly sessions were life changing for Manuel and for our whole family as we saw him gain confidence and begin to believe that he could reach is potential.
